Evening Prayer for Tuesday of Holy Week

Leader:    O God, come to our aid.
People:   O Lord, make haste to help us.

All:   Glory be to the Father and to the Son .........Amen.

Hymn

Psalm 48 (49)
Insult and terror have been my lot, but the Lord is at my side, a mighty hero.

All peoples, listen –
all who live in the world, hear what I have to say:
humble and great together,
rich and poor alike!

My mouth will speak wisdom,
my inmost thoughts will bring good counsel.
I will turn my ears to a mystery,
I will expound a riddle on the lyre.

Why should I be fearful in times of trouble,
when the crimes of usurpers hem me in?
They trust in their own strength
and glory in their great riches.

But, after all, man cannot redeem himself,
he cannot ransom himself before God.
The price of his soul’s redemption is too great,
he cannot pay it –
the price of eternal death avoided.

He will see that even the wise die;
the foolish and the stupid too will perish,
and their riches will pass to others.

Their tombs will be homes to them for ever,
their dwelling-place for all generations,
even if the lands they owned are named after them.

Though he be full of honour, man will not endure:
he is like the beasts of burden, that die;
he is like the beasts that perish.

Glory be to......

Insult and terror have been my lot, but the Lord is at my side, a mighty hero.

Psalm 48 (49)
Deliver me, Lord, and set me close to you: let who will raise his hand against me.
Those who trust in themselves – this is the road they take.
This is the end of those who boast.
Like sheep they go down into the underworld,
and death is their shepherd.

They will fall headlong into the grave:
their faces will be eaten away,
and the underworld will be their dwelling-place.

But God will ransom my life;
truly he will lift me from the grasp of the underworld.
Do not fear, when a man becomes rich
and the glory of his house increases.

When he dies, he will not take it with him,
his glory will not follow him down to the grave.
Even if he calls himself blessed,
says “see how they praise me for my success,”
still he will join his fathers,
cut off from light, for ever.

Though he be full of honour, yet he does not understand.
He is like the beasts of burden, that die;
he is like the beasts that perish.

Glory be to the Father .......
Deliver me, Lord, and set me close to you: let who will raise his hand against me.

Canticle

Apocalypse 4,5

You were slain, Lord, and with your blood you bought us for God.

You are worthy, our Lord and our God,
to receive glory and honour and power;

for you made all things,
and it is by your will that they exist and were created.
You are worthy, Lord,
to receive the book and open its seals,

for you were killed,
and with your blood you have ransomed people
from every tribe and language and people and nation,
and made them rulers and priests for God;
and they will rule over the earth.

The Lamb is worthy, who was killed,
to receive power and riches and wisdom,
strength and honour, glory and blessing.

Glory be to the Father......
You were slain, Lord, and with your blood you bought us for God.

Short Reading;   1 Corinthians 1:27-30

To shame what is strong, God chose what is weak by human reckoning; those whom the world thinks common and contemptible are the ones that God has chosen – those who are nothing at all to show up those who are everything. The human race has nothing to boast about to God, but you, God has made members of Christ Jesus and by God’s doing he has become our wisdom, and our virtue, and our holiness, and our freedom.

Short Responsory

We worship you, Christ, and we bless you.
R.   We worship you, Christ, and we bless you.

By your cross you have redeemed the world.
R.   We worship you, Christ, and we bless you.

Glory be to the Father and to the Son and to the Holy Spirit.
R.   We worship you, Christ, and we bless you.

Canticle

Magnificat

I have the right to lay down my life, and I have the right to take it up again.

My soul proclaims the greatness of the Lord,
and my spirit rejoices in God, my salvation.
For he has shown me such favour –
me, his lowly handmaiden.

Now all generations will call me blessed,
because the mighty one has done great things for me.

His name is holy,
his mercy lasts for generation after generation
for those who revere him.

He has put forth his strength:
he has scattered the proud and conceited,
torn princes from their thrones;
but lifted up the lowly.

He has filled the hungry with good things;
the rich he has sent away empty.

He has come to the help of his servant Israel,
he has remembered his mercy as he promised to our fathers,
to Abraham and his children for ever.

Glory be to the Father.......
I have the right to lay down my life, and I have the right to take it up again.

Prayers and intercessions

Leader:  Let us turn in prayer to the Saviour of all.
By dying he destroyed our death and by rising he restored our life.

R.   Sanctify the people you redeemed by your blood.

Christ, our Redeemer, let us share in your passion by works of penance,
let us attain the glory of your resurrection.

R.   Sanctify the people you redeemed by your blood.

Grant us the protection of your Mother, the comforter of the afflicted,
help us to extend to others the consolation you have given us.

R.   Sanctify the people you redeemed by your blood.

Unite the faithful to your passion in times of trouble and distress
and let the power of your salvation shine forth in their lives.

R.   Sanctify the people you redeemed by your blood.

You humbled yourself even to accepting death, death on a cross;
grant to your servants obedience and patience.

R.   Sanctify the people you redeemed by your blood.

Share with the dead your bodily glory;
let us rejoice one day with them in the fellowship of the saints.

R.   Sanctify the people you redeemed by your blood.

ALL: Our Father.....

ALL: The Lord bless us, and keep us from all evil, and bring us to everlasting life.

  Amen.

An Act of Spiritual Communion
My Jesus,  I believe that You are present
in the Most Holy Sacrament.
I love You above all things,
and I desire to receive You into my soul.
Since I cannot at this moment receive
You sacramentally,
come at least spiritually into my heart.
I embrace You as if You were already there
and unite myself wholly to You.
Never permit me to be separated from You.
Amen.

Extract from Saint Patrick’s Breastplate
Christ with me, Christ before me,
Christ behind me, Christ in me,
Christ beneath me, Christ above me,
Christ on my right, Christ on my left,
Christ when I lie down,
Christ when I sit down,
Christ when I arise,
Christ in the heart of everyone
who thinks of me,
Christ in the mouth of everyone
who speaks of me,
Christ in every eye that sees me,
Christ in every ear that hears me.

Memorare
Remember, O most gracious Virgin Mary,
that never was it known that anyone
who fled to your protection,
implored your help,
or sought your intercession was left unaided.
Inspired with this confidence,
I fly to you, O Virgin of virgins, my Mother.
To you I come, before you I stand,
sinful and sorrowful.
O Mother of the Word Incarnate,
despise not my petitions,
but in your mercy, hear and answer them.
Amen.
